Why is there a hole in Texas Stadium? Aside from the old joke that ‘there is a hole on top of the stadium so that God can watch his favorite football team play,’ the reason behind this unique, interesting and attractive architectural design was to provide the fans of the game an outdoor environment within an indoor setting. People who watched live games actually experienced and enjoyed the game outdoors, while at the same time inclement weather conditions were not able to affect and disturb their viewing pleasure.

Other Interesting Details About the Stadium

When it opened on October 24, 1971, the reported cost of the construction was $35 million. It has a seating capacity of 65,675. Aside from hosting the Dallas Cowboys and other football games, this place has also been a venue for other huge religious gatherings and crusades like Billy Graham and Promise Keepers. Add to that, the stadium also played host to professional wrestling events including the David Von Erich Memorial Parade of Champions under the World Class Championship Wrestling.

This place has also hosted a professional lacrosse game under the Major League Lacrosse. The event took place on May 25, 2008, when the Long Island Lizards competed against the Philadelphia Barrage. The final high school football game that was played here took place in 2008, when the Celina Bobcats went up against the Carthage Bulldogs for the state championship.

After the lease of the Dallas Cowboys expired, they will now play on the new Cowboys Stadium within the City of Arlington in Texas. The new venue also has a hole in the roof, which is a tribute in honor of the old Texas Stadium. For $15.4 million, the Texas Department of Transportation has leased the place for up to 10 years.
